4th and 5th Grade January Enrichment

Happy New Year!

I hope you had a wonderful break and time with family and friends.

In January and part of February, we will be studying our identity in Christ. Students will examine some Bible verses and some quotes and talk about what that means for their life and the person God desires them to become.

Each student will be writing a book about a character transformation based on one of the quotes we examine. They can choose to use this book for the Young Author's event.

We will be seeing the play, The Little Prince, in January. One of the themes is looking at the heart and not at the exterior. We will weave this theme into our unit.

Meanwhile, we are still working on Odyssey of the Mind projects.

Join my daughters and I as we make orange cranberry scones. https://vimeo.com/400317660/1ac67a2bc0 __  Recipe: Preheat oven to 400. 3 cups flour 1/3 cup sugar 2 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt 1 Tbsp grated orange peel 12 Tbsp chilled butter, cut into pieces 3/4 cup dried cranberries 1 cup buttermilk Combine dry ingredients and orange zest into a bowl. Cut in the chilled butter and work it with your fingertips until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add dried cranberries and then slowly stir in buttermilk. Knead with hands until mixture is fully incorporated. Divide dough into two equal parts. Flatten on a large baking sheet. Cut each flattened circle into 8 equal triangles. Separate each triangle from the other. Bake at 400 for about 15 minutes.

Virtual Book Club

Virtual Book Club I am hosting a virtual book club for students. Choose one of the books from the list and read by May 31st. Below are the discussion times on Zoom for the first week of June. I will draw a raffle for two $25 Amazon gift cards out of all the names who participate. In addition, I will give each participant a little token of participation. Book choices. Enrichment Week 4 and 5

I am having such a great time with your students. They are delightful. All students have received a login for the Challenge Math. We will be doing this weekly in class. This week, the 2nd and 3rd graders worked on some challenge math and logic problems. They also worked on their "So there I was..." stories. We also started investigating what local businesses do with their leftover food. Next Tuesday, they will bring in their findings (my guest teacher will have the results from the four places Kennedy and I visited). The students will also be researching the care of a class pet. Yes! Our guinea pig purchase has been approved and we will be putting together a brochure about caring for this pet. This week, the 4th and 5th graders finished our cookbook. I'm doing a final edit and then it will be sent to the press! They did a great job. The next step will be putting their sales skills to work as we are going to try to sell 200 copies!
